GarageSale Basic 1.4-Basic version of the eBay ad-tracking tool

eBay has been one of the Internet's big success stories and is still going strong today. GarageSale is an application to track and monitor ads on eBay and GarageSale Basic is a simpler version of it.

There can be few better tools for posting and tracking items on eBay than GarageSale either. Like its bigger brother, GarageSale Basic is beautifully presented, easy to use, and brings all of your bids and items under one convenient umbrella. It's certainly preferable to the time consuming process of posting things via eBay itself.

However, GarageSale Basic it is significantly limited in functionality compared to the main version. The only features common to both are Free Image Hosting, Auction Designs, iPhoto and Aperture integration, eBay attribute support, Coverflow and Spotlight. Everything else including Batch Editing, Variation Support and Financial Report generator are only available in the full version.

Since it's been designed specifically for Mac though, GarageSale Basic still features integration with iPhoto, meaning you can post pictures of items instantly. It would be nice to have seen Picasa support as well but hopefully that will be added in future releases. GarageSale Basic offers WYSIWYG text editing, free image hosting and comes with 140 free auction templates, as well as support for PayPal, Twitter and eBay Stores. The result is that you'll end up presenting more professional eBay ads and thus have a greater chance of selling your stuff.

The WYSIWYG interface is similar to iWeb, and creating an ad does feel like creating a web page. You can even edit and retouch images within GarageSale Basic, although the editing tool is quite limited. Like the main version, it would have been nice if it were possible to track items in iCal though since you have no way of monitoring auctions unless you've got GarageSale open.

Overall though, GarageSale Basic is an excellent application for eBay fans although if you like it, it's definitely worth upgrading to the full version.

LibreOffice is an all-in-one professional office productivity and management package for your PC.

In the same vein as other open source productivity suites like OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice boasts a comprehensive set of office management tools arguably on par with Microsoft Office itself. LibreOffice offers six different office management tools to meet your project management needs: Text Document, Spreadsheet, Presentation, Drawing, Database, and Formula.

Text Document is relatively synonymous with Microsoft Word, where Spreadsheet is like Excel. Presentation mirrors Microsoft's PowerPoint, and Database is similar to Access. Then you also have two additional programs in Drawing and Formula, which are an added bonus to the entire package. LibreOffice is compatible with Microsoft Office's document formats and also supports PDFs natively. It also has its own document format called Open Document.

Unfortunately, if you're unfamiliar with Microsoft Office products, this program might take a little additional time to get used to, particularly if you want to master some of its more advanced features. Regular Microsoft Office users will find LibreOffice's interface quite similar, however, and should pick up on how to use its various programs without too much difficulty.

A great alternative to Microsoft Office, LibreOffice is a must-try for managing your various office projects.

Google Chrome Stable 13.0.782.107-Google's super fast web browser

Google Chrome is a Mac web browser that lets you surf the web in comfort at high speeds.

The first thing we noticed about Google Chrome is that it's unbelievably lightweight. While Firefox was consuming anything from an average of 20-30% of a Mac's CPU, Chrome barely registered on the scale, occasionally touching 1%. For anyone plagued with Firefox memory leaks and crashes, this alone is surely going to be a compelling reason to give Chrome a go.

As you'd expect, Google Chrome also features tabbed browsing, which visually, is more attractive than Firefox which tends to cram them together somewhat. Extensions and bookmarking (including syncing across machines) are included, as is Adobe Flash.

Chrome for Mac only works on Intel Macs and you might find that some add-ons that you used with previous browsers aren't available for it yet. This is rapidly changing however and most popular add-ons are now available on Chrome.

Perhaps most importantly, Google Chrome is extremely quick. Surfing the Softonic site, page-loads took less then a second and all images were loaded very quickly. YouTube in particular loaded with lightening speed.

Overall, the handling of sites using JavaScript in particular is mightily impressive and this has been made even better with the implementation of a V8 Crankshaft. Its also nice to know that with Google Chrome, even if there is a problem with one of your tabs, that it won't crash the whole browser - just the tab itself. However, sandboxing of Flash still isn't available in the Mac version, even though it is on Windows.

The final version ensures that you'll be able to synchronize not only bookmarks across multiple computers, but also browser preferences - including themes, homepage and startup settings, web content settings, preferred languages, and even page zoom settings. Meanwhile, you can also enable each extension to work in incognito mode through the extensions manager.

With thousands of extensions, super fast browsing and all the intelligence and slickness you expect from a Google product, Chrome delivers an excellent browsing experience..

Just when you thought it wasn't possible to come up with any more variants on the zombie theme, up pops Plants vs. Zombies.

In Plants vs. Zombies you have to protect yourself from a "mob of fun-loving zombies" intent on invading your home. Your only defense is a collection of 49 lovingly-tendered, zombie-zapping plants. These are no ordinary plants though - they can use an array of weaponry from peashooters to cherry bombs to destroy the 26 types of zombies before they reach your front door.

The different zombies each have their own skills and abilities so each will require a different tactic to defeat them. Obstacles such as a setting sun (which make your flowers close up), flower-eating frogs and other hazards add to the drama. There are five game modes to choose from, namely Adventure, Mini-Games, Puzzle, Survival and Zen Garden. The range of zombies is truly impressive - from 'Bucketheads' to 'Bobsleigh' zombies that require a different plant to kill them off.

While each scenario is essentially all the same - stopping the zombies crossing the garden - there is enough variation between levels to make Plants vs. Zombies a really good laugh. Each level you win means you win a new arsenal of plants to play with and you can collect sunflower seeds as currency with which to buy more for particularly difficult levels.

Plants vs. Zombies is a Tower Defense-style game with plenty of character, humor and action, making it much more fun that it might sound at first.

RockMelt 0.9.62.313-The ultimate social browser

RockMelt is a social browser that integrates Facebook and Twitter, making them a part of your browser interface, not separate tabs.

Built on the open source Chromium project, RockMelt is unusual for a browser in that you have to log in to use it properly. It looks like Google Chrome with two slim sidebars. On the left is a Facebook bar with all your online friends, and on the right a notifications bar, that houses pop-ups for your Facebook wall, Twitter feed plus any RSS feeds you want. You cannot add email at the moment.

Clicking the Facebook or Twitter button opens a neat window for the appropriate feed. You can disconnect these window, and float them anywhere on your desktop. The same is true of chats on the left sidebar. Next to the address bar RockMelt has a Share button, allowing you to quickly post interesting links to Facebook or Twitter.

If you're a heavy Twitter and Facebook user, RockMelt will really suit you. It's fast, very well thought-out and the social integration is better than anything else available. It may be in Beta, but RockMelt looks and feels like a finished product already.

RockMelt is a genuinely excellent social browser, building on the already great Chrome to make a uniquely attractive and useful application. Essential.

ImageMagick is a set of UNIX tools that can be used to read, write, and manipulate images in almost any format including TIFF, JPEG, PNG, PDF, PhotoCD, and GIF.

The advantage of ImageMagick is that it can be used to create images dynamically, making it suitable for Web apps. In addition, you can resize, rotate, sharpen, color reduce and add special effects to an image with ImageMagick. However, ImageMagick is strictly for those familiar with the Terminal or command line as there is no GUI. You can only make changes to images using commands such as "$magick> convert rose.jpg rose.png".

For those familiar with programming languages, you can use C, C++, Perl, Java, PHP, Python, or Ruby to make changes. A high-quality 2D renderer is also included which provides SVG capabilities. If you are familiar with programming commands, then the range of actions possible with ImageMagick is truly impressive, including conversions, resizing, transparencies, animated GIFs and shape drawing. However, the lack of GUI will exclude most people from using it.

If you know your way around programming languages and need a powerful command line based tool, Image Magick is worth exploring.

Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) 3.4.2-Easily make copies of your hard drive

To safely backup your hard drive, you can create a clone of it, which you will synchronize and backup on another drive.

Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) is a completely free solution to create clones of your disks, so you never ever have to worry again about losing your data. The application features a simple interface, from where you select the drive or folders to backup and the target drive to save to. I've found that you'll have to make sure a local disk is connected to your Mac so the program can start up though.

With CCC you can schedule automatic backups, which saves you the hassle of taking care of the backups yourself. Just decide on what day of the week and time you want CCC to work and let the program do its job.

More knowledgeable users will also like being able to run pre and post-flight shell scripts, checking the list of items removed after a clone, and creating a disk image.

Once thing we've noticed though, is that some Mac OS X 10.5 users have complained of instability issues with CCC.

Despite these problems with Leopard, Carbon Copy Cloner is a very good program to clone and backup your drive, not to mention that it's free. Very much recommended.

Postbox is an intelligent, multi-language cross platform mail client that has clearly been inspired by Thunderbird.

Some say it's a little "too" inspired by Thunderbird but the developers have only basically taken the core code behind it and expanded on it to make what some consider to be a superior mail client. There's no doubt that Postbox features many useful tools that make organizing and tracking your e-mails very intuitive and version 2.0 has made it even better.

Features that particularly standout in Postbox are a slick, Apple Mail style interface, very fast searching for everything from messages to attachments, Gmail style conversation views, tabbed browsing of mail, categories and folders, to-do lists and integration with Address Book, iCal, iPhoto, Spotlight, and Quick Look. Postbox also works with third party apps such as OmniFocus and Things.

Setting-up Postbox is very straightforward. A wizard takes you through the entire import process and Postbox automatically determines connection settings for you. The great thing is Postbox is a lot simpler than Thunderbird and getting your webmail - such as Gmail or Yahoo e-mail onto your desktop - is extremely quick and painless. It can even retrieve your Facebook messages for you using a separate simple setup wizard. Once you've imported, Postbox works behind the scenes to catalog everything including every single bit of text, contact, address, link, picture, document and attachment. Within seconds, you should have a fully searchable and effectively backed-up copy of your e-mail on your hard drive.

Browsing images is a pleasure in Postbox and I liked the way you can scroll through every single image in your inbox in one go. Organizing your mail and work load using Postbox is refreshingly easy and reminds me of a more advanced version of Gmail. It does not however extract labels from Gmail which is a downside because it means reorganising your entire collection once again. You may also receive quite a bit of spam in Postbox because although it has it's own spam filter, it doesn't support more powerful solutions such as SpamSieve.

Postbox is one of the most intelligent e-mail clients you're likely to try on Mac. The latest version is better than ever although now that Outlook is available on Mac in Office 2011, it may have to improve even further to attract more users.

If simplicity is what you are looking for, then PCMedik is perfect. The program interface is simple in the extreme, with only one action and no configuration options. You pick your operating system and processor type, and hit GO. That's it! With the trial version of PCMedik, you can heal - the heal and boost option is for the paid version only.

When PCMedik is finished its scan, it doesn't show any results. In fact, you can only find out what it does to your computer by reading the help file, and even then, it's a fairly vague explanation. This lack of information and explanation won't bother everyone - in fact some users might actually appreciate it - but for most, PCMedik is a little vague.

PCMedik: what does it do and does it work? It's kind of hard to tell, but if you're looking for a very simple fix, it's perfect.

Taking control of your RAM is one way to free up resources as Windows can sometimes be very inefficient at managing it quickly.

Once installed, it doesn't require much setup apart from defining the threshold that you want it to start cleaning RAM. After that, it takes care of the job itself, flushing RAM when it reaches a certain tipping point. When it flushes, there can be a brief lag in your system performance but afterwards you will notice an improvement in performance. However, RAM is like a bottomless pit and the more you clean it out, the fuller it seems to get, especially when opening new applications. Eventually, you may find that the lags it creates when it flushes RAM are causing more problems than letting Windows do the job.

This program may solve your immediate RAM problems but over time, it can get tiresome and it's no substitute for upgrading your RAM.
