MacTubes 3.0.8-Player and downloader especially designed for YouTube

MacTubes is a handy YouTube video player and downloader that allows you to create playlists and download video files.

The program allows you to subscribe to video channels on YouTube and view them from your desktop with no need to actually visit the YouTube site itself. MacTubes can then search and download files directly onto your desktop. It can also allow you to create playlists based on what you've downloaded or what you've searched on. So just line up what you want to watch and let it all go on while you sit back and enjoy.

Searches in MacTubes are more or less the same as using the YouTube site, allowing you to view videos by keyword, theme and even the user who uploaded it. The disadvantage is that you can't see any of the comments without going to the YouTube site, which is one of the best aspects of YouTube anyway. The other big drawback is of course that it only works with YouTube - other major sites such as DailyMotion and Metacafe are completely ignored.

MacTubes is a really easy-to-use and handy YouTube searcher and downloader that will make sure your favorite YouTube clips remain in your hands.

Google Chrome Beta 13.0.782.109-Test the latest beta version of Google Chrome

The stable version of Google Chrome keeps on evolving and developing new features, which you can have a sneak peek at with Google Chrome Beta.

While keeping the same minimalist design and features (new tab page, download manager, incognito window and more) of the stable version, Google Chrome Beta provides you with the possibility to try out the latest tools before they're implemented in the stable version.

Of course, you should bear in mind that using a beta version means you may find the odd bug and have stability issues, but for the most adventurous users this is a small price to pay for being the first to try out new Google Chrome's features – and provide Google with early feedback about them.

If you feel like walking on the wild side, give Google Chrome Beta a try and you'll be able to test new features before anybody else.

Virtual DJ Free Home Edition 7.0.4-Destroy the dance floor with this MP3 mixing tool

Virtual DJ is a complete music mixing application for your desktop, allowing you to dump your vinyl turntables for a laptop. Looking like a classic DJ set-up, with a mixer and two decks, Virtual DJ will be instantly accessible to DJs and newcomers alike.

To get started, simply open your music library, and drag and drop files into the virtual decks. There's a BPM counter to help you judge transitions between tracks, and the visual wave display also helps to cue up your music. Setting sound levels, and altering the bass and treble are all really easy. If you don't want to worry about your transitions, press the auto mix button and let Virtual DJ do all the work for you. Be warned though, that the results are pretty mixed!

You can sample and loop tracks live, add effects, and there's a very natural-feeling scratch mode. For the adventurous, there's a lot you can add to your mixes with Virtual DJ. .

Support for recording your mixes is also available, which is a great way to learn, allowing you to analyze your mistakes and successes with the application. It also means you can record mixes for your friends too! Mixes can be recorded in MP3, burnt to CD or even streamed to internet radio. Virtual DJ can be set up to use two sound cards, if you have them.

Virtual DJ is accessible to beginners and packed with extra features. The downside of the software is that it sticks too much to what a physical DJ setup is - other programs offer four decks and more user-friendly interfaces - small knobs may be great for your fingers, but they're less use on a screen!

On the whole, Virtual DJ is a solid, traditional-looking application. You can showcase your very own mix without having to carry around expensive and bulky equipment.

Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) 3.4.2-Easily make copies of your hard drive

To safely backup your hard drive, you can create a clone of it, which you will synchronize and backup on another drive.

Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) is a completely free solution to create clones of your disks, so you never ever have to worry again about losing your data. The application features a simple interface, from where you select the drive or folders to backup and the target drive to save to. I've found that you'll have to make sure a local disk is connected to your Mac so the program can start up though.

With CCC you can schedule automatic backups, which saves you the hassle of taking care of the backups yourself. Just decide on what day of the week and time you want CCC to work and let the program do its job.

More knowledgeable users will also like being able to run pre and post-flight shell scripts, checking the list of items removed after a clone, and creating a disk image.

Once thing we've noticed though, is that some Mac OS X 10.5 users have complained of instability issues with CCC.

Despite these problems with Leopard, Carbon Copy Cloner is a very good program to clone and backup your drive, not to mention that it's free. Very much recommended.

Playback 1.7.9-Stream media from your Mac to PS3 or Xbox 360

Playback is an easy-to-use tool that allows you to share media on your Mac with any Playstation 3, Xbox 360 or other UPnP compatible device.

Playback integrates with major media applications such as iTunes, iPhoto, Aperture, Adobe Lightroom, Photobooth, EyeTV, and more, meaning all you have to do is select what you want to share. Playback also allows you to control the amount of data being transferred to your devices via a handy bandwidth throttle that ensures you can surf and transfer data at the same time comfortably.

Playback also prides itself on being particularly fast due to the nginx server. Nginx delivers high performance transfer rates, stability and simple configuration which is why its favored by sites such as WordPress, Hulu and SourceForge. Finally, another bonus is that Playback supports HD MKV files so no transcoding is required. However, some Matroska formats are not supported meaning that you have to sit through painfully long transcoding processes before playing certain media.

Overall, Playback is an excellent streaming app for Macs to PS3s and Xbox 360s. Combined with an application such as XBMC, it offers a superb home entertainment setup system.

Postbox 2.5.2-Gmail style mail client based on Thunderbird

Postbox is an intelligent, multi-language cross platform mail client that has clearly been inspired by Thunderbird.

Some say it's a little "too" inspired by Thunderbird but the developers have only basically taken the core code behind it and expanded on it to make what some consider to be a superior mail client. There's no doubt that Postbox features many useful tools that make organizing and tracking your e-mails very intuitive and version 2.0 has made it even better.

Features that particularly standout in Postbox are a slick, Apple Mail style interface, very fast searching for everything from messages to attachments, Gmail style conversation views, tabbed browsing of mail, categories and folders, to-do lists and integration with Address Book, iCal, iPhoto, Spotlight, and Quick Look. Postbox also works with third party apps such as OmniFocus and Things.

Setting-up Postbox is very straightforward. A wizard takes you through the entire import process and Postbox automatically determines connection settings for you. The great thing is Postbox is a lot simpler than Thunderbird and getting your webmail - such as Gmail or Yahoo e-mail onto your desktop - is extremely quick and painless. It can even retrieve your Facebook messages for you using a separate simple setup wizard. Once you've imported, Postbox works behind the scenes to catalog everything including every single bit of text, contact, address, link, picture, document and attachment. Within seconds, you should have a fully searchable and effectively backed-up copy of your e-mail on your hard drive.

Browsing images is a pleasure in Postbox and I liked the way you can scroll through every single image in your inbox in one go. Organizing your mail and work load using Postbox is refreshingly easy and reminds me of a more advanced version of Gmail. It does not however extract labels from Gmail which is a downside because it means reorganising your entire collection once again. You may also receive quite a bit of spam in Postbox because although it has it's own spam filter, it doesn't support more powerful solutions such as SpamSieve.

Postbox is one of the most intelligent e-mail clients you're likely to try on Mac. The latest version is better than ever although now that Outlook is available on Mac in Office 2011, it may have to improve even further to attract more users.

1Password 3.7.2-The ultimate password manager

Keychain on Mac does a pretty good job of managing passwords but once you've tried 1Password you'll probably never look back.

If you're tired of making up passwords to access sites or worried that your passwords are not secure enough, it really is invaluable. 1Password creates strong, unique passwords for you, then remembers and restores them all within your web browser. At first glance, you may be concerned by the potential security risks of having one program manage all your passwords, but the number of users that rely and praise this program illustrates that you have little to worry about.

Using 1Password is very simple. On startup you have to configure one master password, which should be as tough as possible. After that, 1Password detects when you are visiting sites that require passwords and stores them automatically. You can set up time locks so that your Mac is protected while you're away from it and even synchronize it with your iPhone, .Mac account and Palm devices, although it doesn't work with other mobile phones. If you encounter any problems, the developer is also widely praised for their swift response time although I had problems accessing some of their online tutorials.

1Password is a powerful and effective application to manage all your passwords from one place. Highly recommended to protect your identity on the web.

PCMedik 6.8.1.2011-Highly simplified PC optimization

As long as PC users keep looking for ways to make their computer faster, program developers are going to keep looking for ways to make it happen. PCMedik is the latest contender in the ring…

If simplicity is what you are looking for, then PCMedik is perfect. The program interface is simple in the extreme, with only one action and no configuration options. You pick your operating system and processor type, and hit GO. That's it! With the trial version of PCMedik, you can heal - the heal and boost option is for the paid version only.

When PCMedik is finished its scan, it doesn't show any results. In fact, you can only find out what it does to your computer by reading the help file, and even then, it's a fairly vague explanation. This lack of information and explanation won't bother everyone - in fact some users might actually appreciate it - but for most, PCMedik is a little vague.

PCMedik: what does it do and does it work? It's kind of hard to tell, but if you're looking for a very simple fix, it's perfect.

SuperRam 6.8.1.2011-Improve the RAM management on your PC

Taking control of your RAM is one way to free up resources as Windows can sometimes be very inefficient at managing it quickly.

However, it's also a very risky think to carry out as a third party application is effectively deciding what is better for your RAM management than Windows itself. The problem often is that initially, the RAM manager may make a noticeable difference to your machine but after a while, it simply can't hide the fact that you need to install more RAM in your system. SuperRam 5 doesn't do a bad job of increasing computer performance by freeing wasted memory and optimizing memory utilization your computer. Once installed, it doesn't require much setup apart from defining the threshold that you want it to start cleaning RAM. After that, it takes care of the job itself, flushing RAM when it reaches a certain tipping point. When it flushes, there can be a brief lag in your system performance but afterwards you will notice an improvement in performance. However, RAM is like a bottomless pit and the more you clean it out, the fuller it seems to get, especially when opening new applications. Eventually, you may find that the lags it creates when it flushes RAM are causing more problems than letting Windows do the job.

This program may solve your immediate RAM problems but over time, it can get tiresome and it's no substitute for upgrading your RAM.

ImageMagick 6.7.1-2-Convert and resize images using the command line

ImageMagick is a set of tools that can be used to read, write, and manipulate images in almost any format including TIFF, JPEG, PNG, PDF, PhotoCD, and GIF.

The advantage of ImageMagick is that it can be used to create images dynamically making it suitable for Web apps. In addition, you can resize, rotate, sharpen, color reduce and add special effects to an image. However, ImageMagick is strictly for those familiar with the command line as there is no GUI. You can only make changes to images using commands such as "$magick> convert rose.jpg rose.png".

For those familiar with programming languages, you can use C, C++, Perl, Java, PHP, Python, or Ruby to make changes. A high-quality 2D renderer is also included which provides SVG capabilities. If you are familiar with programming commands, then the range of actions possible with ImageMagick is truly impressive including, conversions, resizing, transparencies, animated GIFs and shape drawing. However, the lack of GUI will exclude most people from using it.

If you're familiar with programming languages and need a powerful command line based tool, Image Magick is worth exploring.

If you're a serious gamer then you'll need help to get the most out of your system and ensure your graphics card is performing to the peak of its abilities.

GameGain is quite easy to use and just requires the tweaking of a few throttles and switches to blast your PC into the gaming stratosphere.

GameGain's developers assure that it only optimizes based on the capabilities of your system and won't try and push it past anything it can't handle. If you do experience problems after using GameGain, the system analyzer should help remedy them.

Muso 1.3.21-A more flexible way to browse your music collection

It's difficult to define a program like Muso. It's not a player, nor a playlist manager. It's more like an alternative user interface to manage your music collection.

Once you've imported your music into Muso (either selecting individual folders on the hard drive, or your iTunes library), you'll be able to manage your collection in a much more flexible way. Muso lets you browse complete albums or individual songs, and also sort or filter music by artist, year, rating and other criteria.

Muso includes an advanced tagging system – even with support for mood tags –, as well as the ability to group albums under the same artist, even if the artist's name has slight spelling differences. The program includes album covers and information downloaded from Last.fm, Wikipedia and Amazon to display highly detailed pages about your favorite artists.

Like I said before, Muso is not a player in itself, but it can be linked to other third-party players like iTunes and Winamp. The link enables you to control the player from Muso's interface and also displays the song currently playing, but nothing else. There's a cool feature to generate random playlists, but Muso won't allow you to interact with them in any way – they'll just be added to your player.

Muso works great as an alternative interface to browse your music collection. Too bad it doesn't include playback features!

Freemake Video Converter 2.3.3.0-Convert videos and other media files to popular video formats

Freemake Video Converter is a great video converter for many reasons, but mainly because it’s fast, efficient and really simple to use.

Under a nicely designed interface, Freemake Video Converter presents us with a powerful set of tools that let you convert videos and DVD movies between different formats, as well as create photo slideshows and music visualizations. The program supports the most popular formats (AVI, MP4, WMV, 3GP, DVD, MP3) and can even upload your newly converted file to YouTube straight away.

Using Freemake Video Converter couldn’t be easier. Just select the files you want to convert – either one by one or in batches – and pick the desired target format. Each format includes a few conversion profiles, which you have to choose depending on where you plan to watch your video. Conversions in Freemake Video Converter are quite quick, though obviously it all depends on your original file’s size.

Freemake Video Converter still keeps an ace up its sleeve: the program includes a basic editor with which you can crop, rotate and flip your videos before converting them. In the case of photos and music, the editor lets you create simple visual presentations. On the downside, the editor in Freemake Video Converter was quite unstable during our testing: video playback was a bit clunky and sometimes it didn’t load up the images we had selected.

All in all, Freemake Video Converter is a handy tool to convert videos – and other types of media – to other video formats, all in a very simple way and within a nice interface.

PCHeal 1.8.1.2011-Increase your computer's efficiency

Keeping Windows continually optimized is an ongoing challenge and the worst problem is when software conflict with each other.

PCHeal is designed to step in when you've suffered a major software conflict or system slowdown. It makes direct changes to your system registry and files to enhance memory, screen drawings, animations, refresh rates and CPU threading speeds. According to PCHeal's developers, it automatically adjusts settings and changes made based on computer specifications although it's hard to tell if anything really has been done or not after running the program.

There is also a deep system analyzer and diagnostic tool in PCHeal which attempts to find and repair any potential problems with the computer which is affecting its performance. PCHeal also focuses on over-clocking features to enhance memory and CPU priorities and there's an easy and intuitive user interface which performs all setting changes immediately. In reality, in the case of a major software conflict, there's little you can do but PCHeal offers some hope of at least recuperating some of your system's performance without uninstalling the guilty products.

Worth a try if you've experienced a major system failure although don't expect it to perform miracles.

Throttle 6.8.1.2011-Push internet and computer speed to the max!

Throttle is an extremely simple program - a single interface, no configuration options - to make your computer and modem function as quickly as they can.

Once you open Throttle, it will ask for two facts - what operating system you are using, and what kind of modem connection you have. Once you chose from the dropdown menu, press GO and that's pretty much it. There's also a Speed Setting area, but you won't be able to change this in the trial version.

Once you've let Throttle do its work, you'll have to restart to see the benefits. In tests we could see an improvement, especially opening folders and files. If you're interested in the mechanics of the program - how exactly it makes things faster - you'll have to look in the Throttle help section, which explains the process.

As is usual with optimization programs, whether or not they do any good depends on your computer and the user's perception. Seeing as how Throttle is easy on resources, simple to use and fast, however, there's probably no reason not to give it a try.
